Rise of the Runelords Anniversary - Weekly
Borgnine was born near the capital of Xa Hoi. He never knew his parents, instead being raised by a necromancer by the name of Huu Tai. Borgnine live most of his years in Huu Tai’s castle. Huu Tai raised Borgnine like a son and they grew attached to each other.
During Borgnine’s younger days he was not allowed to observe Huu Tai’s work. Instead he was watched over by the undead created by Huu Tai. Oddly enough, the young wayang was never scared by the undead and often played games with them. Of course they were mindless but Borgnine could still command them. As Borgnine grew older he was allowed to watch Huu Tai work. Huu Tai hoped he could teach Borgnine to be a necromancer like himself, but Borgnine showed no magical talent. He did, however, show an acute eye to detail and was able to take apart and build some of the more complicated traps around the castle. Seeing this amazing ability in the young wayang, Huu Tai showed him how to build traps and other similar devices to protect the castle. It was at this point Borgnine decided to become the best trapmaker ever.
Borgnine enjoyed his days in the castle until the fateful day that both Huu Tai and Borgnine dreaded. The government found out about Huu Tai’s practices and staged a raid on the castle lead by one of the generals of the feared Dragon’s Teeth. The traps and undead were no match for Xa Hoi’s forces and were quickly overrun. As the last room was breached by the nation’s forces; Huu Tai told Borgnine to escape. Borgnine took one last look at his mentor, master and father then ran. He escaped through one of the secret passages and made it out of the castle. He was nearly found multiple times but knew the castle well enough to outmaneuver the general’s forces. Once he was out of danger he took one look back at the castle; he knew he would never see it or Huu Tai again. Borgnine blamed himself for the death of his master. With better traps the castle might not have fallen.
With nowhere to go Borgnine wandered the continent of Tian Xia. He heard many wondrous tales of adventure and travel. On his journey he met an influential Halfling by the name of Miro. Borgnine decided that he would follow Miro in the shadows and see what was going on. Miro was a priest of Desna and told of the many journeys he has had. Borgnine decided he would follow Miro for a while. Eventually Miro discovered his follower and coaxed Borgnine out of the shadows. Miro told Borgnine that he was welcome to join in his journeys and to explore the world with him. At first Borgnine was shy and reclusive, usually staying out of sight of everyone, including Miro.
As the months passed Borgnine grew more comfortable around Miro and asked more about the teachings of Desna, eventually being converted to a follower of Desna. After about a year of traveling, their journey eventually took them to Goka. Miro told Borgnine that he wished to return home to the town of Sandpoint and that he was welcome to join him. Borgnine decided that he had nowhere else to go and went with Miro. They took a ship from Goka to the city of Magnimar in the country of Varisia. From Magnimar they traveled the remaining distance to Sandpoint by themselves. They arrived at Sandpoint during the time known as the “late unpleasantness”.
During the first couple years in Sandpoint Borgnine worked vigorously on improving his trapmaking skills. He rarely ever came out of their house. Eventually, with coaxing from Miro, Borgnine started to come out and explore the city. Mostly sticking to the shadows he would observe people and their actions and patterns. While at one of the taverns, the Fatman’s Feedbag; Borgnine was approached by a man named Jubrayl Vhiski. Beining the leader of the Sczarni he had heard of Borgnine’s trapmaking ability. He asked Borgnine to craft traps for the Sczarni and Borgnine agreed. Later, when he told Miro about the incedent, Miro told him that the Sczarni are a bad group of people to be involved with and that he should not tell anyone that he is working with them. Borgnine, however, kept making traps for the Sczarni but listened to Miro’s advice and told no one else about it.
It has been a few years and not much has changed with Borgnine. He still lives with Miro at his house and can usually be found there designing traps. Every so often, he will venture out with Miro or by himself to study the people of Sandpoint.
